Just a Suggestion??? Obedience Is Not Just for Kids

a speed limit sign

I’m sure I’m not the only one who doesn’t always follow the speed limit completely! It’s all too easy to view speed limits as more of a loose suggestion than a law. I’m really not trying to tell you how to drive, but it’s amazing how often we expect kids to obey us or their teachers but think that we get a pass because we’re older. Ephesians 6:1 is probably the most familiar Bible verse about obedience: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.” Kids should obey their parents, but that doesn’t mean that teens or adults are off the hook (in fact, “children” here includes teenagers since the idea of a separate age category called teens is fairly recent). Even adults have authorities we need to obey. Ultimately, obeying authorities means obeying God…and disobeying earthly authority means we are disobeying God. Romans 13:1 says, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

I’m not here to judge you if you go a bit over the speed limit, but I do want to encourage all of us to obey our authorities just as much as we expect children to obey theirs. Those in authority over us aren’t perfect, but even less-than-perfect teachers, bosses, and parents have been put into our lives by our perfect God and should be obeyed.
