Judges 12 records a battle that where you were from could be a matter of life or death. Judges 12:5-6 says, “And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; 6 Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.” It might sound cheesy but it’s true: In this battle, how you talked could cost you your life because it showed who you were.
Can people tell who we are as Christians by how we talk, what we do, where we go and don’t go, and who we choose to spend time with? In the battle, it was life or death, but for lost people around us, our testimony and witness could be used to help change where someone spends all of eternity.
