I love gadgets! I’m amazed that this little flashlight shines over 600 feet! Living by a big field, our dog will sometimes run off into the night, and it’s helpful to be able to see what’s out there. And of course I’ve tested it out (played with it 😊) by shining it at a bunch of stuff. That sign was so reflective that an imaginary second “sign” showed up in the picture! Even those bricks did a good job of bouncing a lot of light back. The light is so bright that it can hurt your eyes no matter what it’s shining at. I’ve noticed that if the light source is bright enough, even stuff that is less than perfect at reflecting can still shine brightly.
John 1:6-7 describes John the Baptist: “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.” John the Baptist had a special mission to prepare the way for Jesus and announce that Jesus had come. Really, his job was to point people to Jesus, to reflect the true Light to the world around him, and that’s something we can all do. We can help people see what Jesus is really like as we live for Him and love people the way He did. We won’t be a perfect reflection of Jesus, but the Light is so bright that we can still give a good picture of Jesus to those around us if we are willing to let Jesus shine through us.
But I’ve also learned something else about flashlights: They can only shine in one direction at a time! John the Baptist was a popular guy and could’ve tried to hog the spotlight for himself, but instead he kept pointing people to Jesus. In John 3:30, he says this about Jesus: “He must increase, but I must decrease” How reflective are you? When people look at your life, do they see you or Jesus living through you? Let’s shine the light!
