Driving Lessons

I’m not looking forward to this kid being old enough to drive a real car just yet, and Jen seems to think I should be the one to teach our girls how to drive. Brooklyn drives like a pro on the 4-wheeler (and always keeps her hands on the handlebars unless she’s posing for a picture!), but when she first started, I was nervous! It would have been easy for us to doubt her and say “No Brooklyn, you can’t drive that until you’re older” or “Not that fast!” It would have been easy for us to limit her, but the truth is, Brooklyn does great, is very safe, and even drives Addison around sometimes. They both would have missed out on some serious fun if we hadn’t given them a chance.

In Matthew 13, Jesus is around some people who had known Him and His family for years and should have known more about Him than anyone. Unfortunately, they doubted Who He really is and what He’s able to do; watch what happens in verse 58: “And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.”

Jesus had bigger plans for these people, but they missed out because of their unbelief. Jesus will often choose to do more in the lives of people who believe that He is able, that He is Who He said He is. Jesus has proven Himself over and over, and we should never limit how much He will do in our lives. He’s earned our full respect, and our lives should show that we genuinely believe He is the Creator, Savior, and Master.

If we had told Brooklyn that she wasn’t allowed to drive the 4-wheeler, we would have missed out on seeing what she can do. These people in Matthew 13 missed out on Jesus because they thought so little of Him.

What do you think of Jesus? Is He your Savior? As a Christian, is He worthy of being followed in every area of your life? Does your life show that you know He’s powerful enough to take care of you and that it really is true that “He’s got the whole world in His hands”? Let’s not let unbelief make us miss out on anything Jesus wants to do in our lives.
