Bandaids Cover But Don't Help

Brooklyn was “mortally wounded” the other day (actually, it was a very small “wound” that wasn’t even bleeding!), but Brooklyn. Loves. Bandaids! For a kid, apparently there’s something about a bandaid that mentally makes a wound feel better…even if it doesn’t actually do anything to help! Bandaids are great for stopping bleeding or covering up a wound, but they don’t help anything to actually heal.

There’s nothing wrong with slapping on a bandaid (especially a fun s’mores one like this!), but for real-life issues, we need a solution that actually fixes the problem instead of just covering it up.

Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” Imagine if Brooklyn had a nasty festering wound and simply wanted to hide it, to keep it covered with a bandaid. She’d probably lose a finger eventually! It might seem easier to try to cover up our sins and to hope that the “festering” spiritual issue in our hearts will somehow just go away, but that’s not reality. We need real forgiveness for our real sins. Thankfully, Jesus offers His perfect righteousness when we accept Him as Savior; but as Christians, we still have a choice when we sin: confess and forsake our sin and get mercy, or try to cover it up and suffer the consequences. Festering wounds get worse over time, and festering sin will get worse unless we follow God’s plan. Anything else is just a bandaid fix that only covers up the real issue.
